It's remarkable how many people have become attached to their phones--a single point of failure in their communication plans. A mobile phone (cellular phone) relies on a SIM card which is designed to be unique, meaning one must carry a specific device with them at all times.

A contrary, more useful, situation is having a means of communication that follows a person. You sit down at a computer, and your VOIP connection is established and your Jabber persona retrieves any queued messages--there's no need to carry a special device around at all times to make a call or receive expensive SMS messages.
