Removal of the Jumanji-like scene in Max's room in favour of the child running out the door at night

My Opinion of Removal of the Jumanji-like scene in Max's room in favour of the child running out the door at night:

The Where the Wild Things Are film altered the scene from the book which describes the main characters journey to the eponymous location from a Jumanji-like springing-forth of the jungle to Max instead running away.

Personally I wish the authors had found a way of maintaining the original scene while still keeping the feeling of the film as it ended-up. In particular, the final scene where Max returns home seems awkward, and it's unclear what exactly happened as the film concludes with him coming back in through the front door. I feel like having Max head into his room, and sneak out--and later back in--through a window there would have addressed this inconsistency (but then perhaps turning Max into Clarissa and Sam would not have kept the same flow the picture envisioned. Or perhaps it is important to recognize that children do get frustrated and run away and hide, and that makes the underlying message of forgiveness that much more important.
