/The Matrix/ was a
film franchise beginning in the late 1990s extending into the early 2000s. The focus of the franchise were three
feature length films notable for the special effects introduced in the first film and used throughout the series. The franchise also contained video games based on the movies and an animated movie that is considered canon and provides additional information about the fictional world of the films.
The first film was well received for its special effects and
interesting story line, while the second two, which were much more closely related to each other than either was with the first, were panned for being contrived and uninteresting. The sequels were seen as resorting to sexual pandering instead of building upon the earlier film
