A lot of poorly written, unprofessional web sites--and some that aspire to be otherwise, have their own idea of what constitutes a valid e-mail address. These web sites make their users lives more difficult and frustrating, and lose a handful of customers who are probably more profitable than those who aren't as web savvy.
You're only hurting yourself and angering your users, so get it right.
