Backless vest (
waistcoat
) is one where there is a minimal amount of fabric in the back, if any beyond a string connecting the left and right sides of the front in order to support it upon its wearer.
Usually only
formal waistcoat
are made backless. As
one is prohibited by decorum from removing one's jacket in formal dress
, the back is unnecessary, and a backless vest could be a more comfortable alternative to a
fullback vest
instead of a
cummerbund
.
