Extended warranties have become a cash cow for companies who pry on the insecurity and lowered expectations of customers who don't understand, or don't care about, the fact that most failures fit a
bathtub curve, meaning that
extended warranties tend to cover the time of least-likely failure.
Moreover, while some people buy these plans because they don't want to worry about purchasing a new device, which requires new set-up and may lose data--these plans almost never cover data, only the physical device (and, sometimes, not even everything that was purchased).
