Opening with spectacular shots of Marseille, France, one end of the eponymous drug trade, before moving to NYC where most of the film takes place.

The film follows the French ringleaders as they arrive in the U.S. to discuss business with their American contacts. Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) gets a tip-off from an informer and the rest of the film involves Doyle chasing the French ringleader who has shaken the rest of the police tasked to monitor him.
