Glossy displays are a
horrible idea in practicality but have proven to be a relatively successful
marketing gimmick. Glossy displays on laptops are often considered to enhance a screen's image on a display shelf where there is no direct light, and the benefits of the finish--enhanced contrast and colour--can be seen.
However, when used in most practical environments--especially in an office with uncontrolled lighting, near windows, or outside--the screens become nearly unusable, with excessive glare and reduced visibility requiring one to strain to make out any text.
