For the 2008 tax filing, the
Internal Revenue Service has extended its free online filing system to all
federal tax payers regardless of
income. Previously, it was restricted to people making less than a specified amount. This didn't make much sense in my opinion, as using the IRS' system cannot realistically cost the government more money without considering something like kick-backs from other tax companies (or considering the impact on the
tax preparation software industry. Unlike other tax-prep solutions, the IRS system only provides online forms and basic calculation functionality, but does not have a user-friendly
interview to help the user better understand what is necessary to do.
It relies on
Shockwave Flash, which means it's still not very useful for people using
PowerPC-based computers, such as older
Apple products.
