My Opinion of ATI Radeon driver support:

ATI used to have the best video cards under Linux, mostly on the strength of their open-source drivers. This stopped when they stopped releasing documentation around the time they released the Radeon 9x00 series. Five years later, in in September of 2007 after Advanced Micro Devices had acquired them, they reversed this position allowing open-source developers to once again write drivers for the cards.

This once again makes ATI the only alternative for open-source operating systems.
