A
waistcoat appropriate for
semi-formal dress, such as
black tie, should be low cut, such that it is mostly hidden by the
dinner jacket and shows the texture of the
shirt as well as the
shirt studs. These waistcoats often have three or four buttons very close together, but may be either single or double breasted.
A proper semi-formal waistcoat
should not look like it belongs as part of a
three piece suit, regardless of its constituent material. Any
silk on the waistcoat should match that of the dinner jacket. Waistcoats are not properly worn with
double-breasted jackets.
