you can turn on NXDOMAIN

just google for "opendns NXDOMAIN" and you will learn how. basically it's in the settings: disable proxying and typo correction. i've found that their servers have more reliably low-latency performance than what Verizon FiOS was providing; response times from Verizon were really all over the place before i switched to OpenDNS.
