Shouting at a number just does not work very well. It's clear that you don't really know much about a person, it's likely there might be two of the number on the playing field, and frankly, people aren't tuned to pick up on a number like they are their name--they just don't have the same exposure to it--so not having a person's name on a jersey makes taunting more difficult and impersonal.
